Explosives and Freedom’s Two Friends

During senior year of high school, three of my good friends and I were granted an extraordinary amount of freedom. We formed a rocket team to compete in a national competition. It was a great excuse to play with wood, razors, glue, and paint.

And explosives!

Qualifying for the competition required us to be off campus often to launch rockets and analyze their flights. Which required driving there, often in our own vehicles.

Though there was definitely a rule against driving our cars off campus during school time, we were the exception to the rule.

This freedom was not free, however. It was only possible thanks to two very good reasons. Did you know freedom always hangs around its two friends?

The first is discipline.

The four of us did our homework on time. We were in the advanced classes. We worked very hard to compete with each other on every quiz and test. We were studying physics and calculus and we applied our rocketry design to our homework and vice versa.

For the most part, we followed the rules and didn’t make trouble.

The second is responsibility.

We were trusted to do what we were told, even when no teachers were around. Each time we were granted a little freedom, we proved we could manage ourselves well and not abuse the power. Though we were mischievous for sure, we didn’t ever get in much trouble.

It took us years to earn a reputation for responsibility.

During senior year, these two combined to earn us freedom — glorious freedom!

Freedom to drive off campus and play games in class and many other liberties forbidden to students. Of course, this all depended on our willingness to respect the teachers’ rules, get our work done, and be a good example to the younger students.

And you know what? It felt so good to be trusted, there was no way we would abuse our freedom!

What a great life lesson.

It’s difficult to earn freedom. It takes tons of discipline and years of responsibility. Those who don’t have it resent those who do. They whine about not having it.

But those who have earned freedom have found a very good thing.

Are you earning freedom through discipline and responsibility? How would your boss or spouse answer this question about you?

Rise Above the Task

You keep getting overwhelmed by the task at hand. It is too much, or so it seems. All you can see is the obstacle in your path.

You know better than that.

TR143045_

You are tremendously capable. You have conquered mountains before, so why should you let this puddle stop you?

You have got to get your nose out of the fog and rise above the task.

Rise, because you know better. Rise, because you have beaten enemies far greater than this. Rise, because you are wasting all of your energy and resources whining about it instead of proceeding to adventures beyond.

Rise, so you can see what is just past this obstacle — not to mention the treasures down the road. Rise, so you will realize this is a minor problem which won’t matter tomorrow. Rise, so you can achieve the much grander task God has created for you and you alone.

It only matters that you conquer this task. The task itself does not matter at all. There will be plenty more tedious and arduous and painful tasks after this one, and you will surmount them all just as you have done now.

What is your alternative? Give up? Ha! This will only make the obstacle more treacherous and scary when you face it days, weeks, or years from now.

And you will be forced to face it again if you do not conquer it now!

Adversity is preparation for greatness.

No more whining. No more undermining the system which placed the task in your hands.

This is war, and your only choice is to win.

Otherwise, you will return again and again only to hopelessly admit defeat to something which has no power over you.

Stop steering away from the storm. No more avoiding the very thing which will make you stronger, sharper, and more resilient.

If you only rise above it.

Resolve right now not to back down from the obstacle in front of you. Make a specific plan to overcome it once and for all.

The Byproducts of Mastering a Keystone Habit

It seems those who are growing the fastest — those who are intentional and proactive with their lives — all have something in common.

They start by changing a single habit until they have mastered it. This clears the way for some powerful momentum to take over.

There is an incredible phenomenon which happens when you master a keystone habit.

It may not matter which habit, either!

For us it was money. We were exposed to Dave Ramsey and latched onto the wisdom of what he teaches about getting out of debt and living on less than you make. We read many books on the topic. We discussed it with friends and coworkers, collecting the best of everyone’s experience and insight — and discarding the rest!

It all started to make sense. We put into action what we learned by piling money onto our loans like buckets of water on a fire. We punched debt in the face! We are now debt-free and will never go back.

This was incredibly empowering, and had wonderful byproducts. Though the original exercise was purely financial, but it bled into other areas.

Insert momentum here.

We figured out wills and life insurance. We got rid of a bunch of stuff and simplified our lifestyle drastically. We sold one of our beaters and bought a nicer used car.

We even started taking more walks.

And it can all be traced to proactively mastering a keystone habit regarding money.

Growth begets growth.

For a friend, it was fitness. He now works out several times every week. The boost to his confidence and energy have been huge and undeniable.

The tremendous encouragement he found through fitness fueled him to take on new challenges.

This is the power of mastering a keystone habit.

What is your keystone habit?

Here are some ideas: Lose weight. Get a better job. Attend church regularly. Get serious help with a bad habit. Live on your own. Grow deeper relationships with friends. Smile while you talk. Delegate the tasks you hate doing. Get up early and read every morning. Throw away your television.

Any one of these may be just what you need — a keystone habit for you to work on.

Put all of your energy into following through.

And let the progress you make build momentum to carry you through the next milestone. And the next.

Growth begets growth.

No really — what is your keystone habit? What will you work on now to open the door for future growth?

The Power to Change

Change is hopeless on your own. Without it, you will be doomed to wander around the same track of bad habits and their consequences.

The scenery might change, but it is still the same loop, over and over.

You do not have the ability to change.

What is the power source, then?

In case you missed the bad news, you don’t have the power to change on your own. Left to your own devices, you may be able to fall into a new trap a new way — you may change the details, but you won’t really ever change.

For example, you may struggle with drinking and manage to switch that habit to smoking instead. Either way, you might struggle with avoiding something you need to deal with.

You may struggle with materialism and shopping constantly. You eventually switch efforts to fast-tracking your career. But you may still be a slave to people-pleasing like always.

Back to the power source.

I struggled with quitting a bad habit for years. I tried plenty of strategies and tricks. But they weren’t enough. Yet that is long gone now, and I am not the man I used to be a few years ago.

Change didn’t happen until I plugged in the power source — God through me. It wasn’t until I got out of the way and let God work in me.

You might get upset about the spiritual references. It might make you uneasy how I bring God into this. But you’ve tried changing on your own, and it obviously hasn’t worked. You are reading this because badly need to change.

It’s incredibly scary. So what.

Letting go of your control (pride) and embracing faith in God unlocks lasting, meaningful change.

What is stopping you from having faith in God? Are the alternatives working?

The Bad News About Change

Things have gotten horrible. Your bad habits are catching up with you. You need to change. You want to change. And you are ready to change.

DSC_0002_

However, I have some bad news for you.

You have no power to change.

“Not true,” you might say. Sadly, I cannot tell you any differently.

Though you have the desire, you do not have the ability to embrace lasting change on your own.

You might be able to change a little bit or switch bad habits. You may even be able to enforce militant change upon yourself for a time.

But ultimately you will fail on your own.

To be continued…

What makes lasting change possible?
